All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Kalyani, Nadia

AIIMS Kalyani was officially sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) by the Union Cabinet on October 7, 2015. The Institute was planned to be developed on a 179.82-acre site located along National Highway 34, approximately 50 kilometers from Kolkata, in the village of Basantapur, near Kalyani, in Nadia district, West Bengal.

Established by the Central Government under the authority granted by the proviso to sub-section (1) of Section 3 of the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences Act, 1956 (25 of 1956), the creation of AIIMS Kalyani was formally notified by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on January 24, 2018.

As an Institute of National Importance, AIIMS Kalyani was founded to address disparities across three key dimensions: regional healthcare access, availability of medical specialties, and the ratio of doctors to nurses and other healthcare professionals. The Institute aims to establish exemplary standards in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, setting a benchmark for other medical and allied institutions throughout India.

In its first phase, AIIMS Kalyani is envisioned as a 960-bed hospital equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities. The institution also places a special focus on integrating Alternate Systems of Medicine through the AYUSH initiative. Future development plans include the expansion of various super-specialty departments to further enhance the scope and quality of healthcare services offered.

In 2018, Dr. Chitra Sarkar, Professor in the Department of Pathology and Dean (Research) at AIIMS New Delhi, was appointed as the first President of AIIMS Kalyani.

The Institute commenced its inaugural academic session on September 4, 2019, welcoming its first batch of 50 MBBS students. Subsequently, in May 2020, Prof. (Dr.) Ramji Singh assumed the role of the first Executive Director of AIIMS Kalyani.
