Overview

In response to the acute shortage of doctors in West Bengal, the state government took the initiative to establish a new medical college in Kamarhati—a strategic location known as the gateway to North Kolkata. In 2010, a government memo formally sanctioned the setup of a medical college with an annual intake of 100 MBBS students within the campus of Sagore Dutta State General Hospital.

Following an inspection by the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 2011, the College of Medicine & Sagore Dutta Hospital received its Letter of Permission on June 30, 2011. The inaugural MBBS batch commenced classes on August 1, 2011. The college was granted official recognition for its MBBS program in February 2016.

To diversify its academic offerings, the college introduced several paramedical courses over the next few years. DMLT and DRD programs began in 2014, followed by DPT, DOPT, DOTT, and ECG courses in 2015, and the DCCT program in 2016. A GNM Nursing School was launched in 2017 with an initial intake of 60 students, which was increased to 100 students per year in 2021.

Postgraduate education commenced in 2019 with courses in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Ophthalmology—making it the first medical college in West Bengal, established after 2005, to offer PG courses within three years of recognition. That same year, the number of MBBS seats was increased from 100 to 125. By 2020, the number of PG seats had expanded to 35 across 10 specialties.

In 2018, the institution was selected for the development of a Tertiary Cancer Care Centre for the region. The facility's construction is nearly complete and is expected to become operational by the end of this year.

Despite being designated as a dedicated COVID-19 hospital in 2020, the institution continued to provide essential services, particularly in emergency care, gynecology & obstetrics, and pediatrics. In 2022, the College of Nursing was established, admitting its first batch of 100 students.

As of 2022, the institution accommodates an annual intake of 125 MBBS students, 35 postgraduate students across 10 disciplines, 40 paramedical students, 100 GNM students, and 100 B.Sc. Nursing students—solidifying its role as a vital center for medical education and healthcare in the region.
