R. G. Kar Medical College & Hospital is a historic public medical institution located in the Belgachia area of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Established in 1886 by Dr. Radha Gobinda Kar, it holds the distinction of being Asia's first private medical college . Originally named the Calcutta School of Medicine, the institution underwent several transformations, including mergers and renaming, before being officially recognized as R. G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in 1948 to honor its founder .
