About the Country
ABOUT THE COUNTRY:
Russia, officially known as the Russian Federation, is the largest country in the world by land area, spanning over 17 million square kilometers and stretching across eleven time zones. It occupies a unique geographical position, straddling both Eastern Europe and Northern Asia, and shares borders with 14 countries, including China, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine. Despite its immense size, much of Russia’s territory is sparsely populated, with the majority of its 146 million citizens residing in the western part of the country. The capital city, Moscow, is not only the political and economic heart of Russia but also one of the most populous urban centers in Europe. Saint Petersburg, the former imperial capital, remains a cultural beacon, renowned for its architecture, museums, and historical significance. Russia’s history is deeply layered, beginning with the ancient Slavic tribes and evolving through the powerful Tsardom, the rise and fall of the Soviet Union, and its emergence as a modern federal republic in 1991. The country has played a pivotal role in global affairs, particularly during the 20th century, when it was a central force in both World Wars and the Cold War era. Economically, Russia is rich in natural resources, including oil, natural gas, coal, and precious metals, which form the backbone of its export-driven economy. It is also a major player in global energy markets. The country’s industrial base is complemented by advancements in space technology, military innovation, and scientific research. Culturally, Russia boasts a profound legacy in literature, music, ballet, and visual arts, with figures like Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Tchaikovsky, and Kandinsky shaping global artistic traditions. The Russian Orthodox Church also plays a significant role in the nation’s spiritual and cultural identity. Russia’s climate varies dramatically from the Arctic tundra in the north to temperate forests and steppe regions in the south. Winters are famously harsh, especially in Siberia, while summers can be surprisingly warm in many regions.
Today, Russia continues to assert its influence on the global stage through its foreign policy, military presence, and strategic alliances. It remains a country of contrasts ancient yet modern, vast yet intimate in its cultural expressions making it one of the most fascinating nations in the world.
