Overview
In 1964, the Government of India appointed a high-level committee chaired by Prof. D. R. Gadgil to evaluate the training requirements of the cooperative sector. The committee recommended the establishment of a national-level institute to provide training for senior personnel in cooperative institutions and departments, conduct both fundamental and applied research, offer consultancy services, and organize management courses for professionals in cooperative business organizations. It also emphasized the need to educate youth in various aspects of management.
Subsequently, the Central Institute of Management for Consumer's Business (CIMCOB) was merged with the National Cooperative College and Research Institute (NCCRI), resulting in the formation of a unified national institute. In April 1967, this institute was named Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management (VAMNICOM), in honor of Shri Vaikunth Mehta, a prominent figure in the Indian cooperative movement. VAMNICOM receives financial support from the Ministry of Cooperation, Government of India.
