The Karnataka Medical Education Minister, Sharan Prakash Patil, has announced that the fees for MBBS and BDS courses will remain unchanged for the 2025–2026 academic session. This decision comes despite repeated appeals from private medical and dental colleges to increase tuition fees by 10% to 15% this year.
The state government has also decided not to expand the number of MBBS and BDS seats for the 2025 session. This move brings relief to aspiring medical and dental students across Karnataka, helping to maintain affordability amid rising education costs nationally.
Private medical and dental colleges had submitted proposals requesting a fee hike of 10–15%, citing operational and infrastructural costs. However, Minister Patil stated that the 10% increase approved in the previous academic year (2024–25) was sufficient, and no further hike would be permitted this year.
The Minister confirmed the decision after holding discussions with representatives from private college managements. He added that a formal agreement outlining this position is expected to be signed soon, as reported by Medical Dialogues.
In the 2024–25 academic session, the Karnataka government had approved a 10% fee hike for MBBS courses following persistent demands from private colleges. This led to a fee increase from approximately ₹9 lakh to ₹10 lakh. However, for the upcoming session, the government has firmly decided to freeze the current fee structure.
