Every academic year, thousands of students across West Bengal achieve what they worked so hard for-a seat in a prestigious university, a top-tier engineering college, or a competitive exam preparation track. But almost immediately, the excitement can be overshadowed by financial reality. Tuition fees, hostel rent, textbooks, and daily expenses quickly add up, leaving many families wondering how to bridge the gap without taking on overwhelming debt.To ensure financial hardship never cuts a student's ambitions short, the Government of West Bengal launched the West Bengal Student Credit Card (WBSCC) Scheme. Designed as a genuine support system rather than a commercial bank product, the scheme offers students a dignified path to fund their higher education.
What Makes the Scheme So Student-Friendly?
Traditional education loans often come with rigid hurdles-demanding collateral assets, high interest rates, and complex third-party guarantees. The West Bengal Student Credit Card changes the dynamic entirely.
- Loan Amount Up to 10 Lakh: Students can access up to 10,00,000 for studies in India or abroad. This covers everything from general degrees and professional programs like B.Tech, M.A., or MBBS to professional coaching for WBCS, IAS, JEE, and NEET.
- 4% Simple Interest Rate: The state government provides interest subvention, capping the net simple interest rate at just 4% per annum. If you choose to clear interest amounts during your study period, you receive an additional 1% interest concession.
- Zero Collateral Required: Neither you nor your parents need to mortgage property, fixed deposits, or land. The state government acts as the guarantor, requiring only a parent or legal guardian as a co-borrower.
- 15-Year Repayment Window: Repayment can be spread comfortably over 15 years, keeping monthly obligations manageable as you settle into your career.
Relief Through the Moratorium Period One of the most compassionate features of the WBSCC scheme is its built-in moratorium (repayment holiday).
You do not have to make loan repayments while you are actively studying, nor immediately after passing your final exams. Repayment begins only 1 year after completing your course or 6 months after securing employment, whichever comes first. This grace period gives graduates time to focus on internships, job interviews, and launching their careers without immediate financial strain.
What Expenses Are Covered?
A common worry among students is whether a loan will cover real living costs alongside official tuition fees. The West Bengal Student Credit Card covers both institutional and living needs
