Eligibility

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for admission to the MBBS program at ASMU, Indian students must meet the following requirements:

  • Age: The applicant must be at least 17 years old by December 31st of the admission year.

  • Academic Qualification: Students must have passed their 10 2 (or equivalent) examination with a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) for the general category. For students from the SC/ST/OBC categories, the minimum requirement is typically 40% marks in PCB.

  • NEET-UG Exam: Qualifying for the NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is mandatory for all Indian students, as per the guidelines of the National Medical Commission (NMC). A valid NEET scorecard is required.

  • Language: The medium of instruction is English, so there are no mandatory language proficiency tests like IELTS or TOEFL.

Practicing in India

For Indian students who study MBBS abroad and wish to practice in India, there are specific, mandatory requirements set by the National Medical Commission (NMC). These ensure that foreign-trained doctors meet the same standards as those who graduated from Indian medical colleges.

  • NEET-UG Qualification: You must have qualified for the NEET-UG exam before getting admission to your foreign university. This is a non-negotiable prerequisite.

  • NMC-Approved University: The foreign university must be recognized and listed by the NMC. A degree from a non-approved institution is not valid in India.

  • Course Structure: The MBBS course must be a minimum of 54 months of academic study, followed by a 12-month compulsory internship in the same foreign institution. The entire 6-year program must be completed in the same university abroad, with no part of the training being done in India.

  • National Exit Test (NEXT): After completing your degree abroad, you must pass the National Exit Test (NEXT). This is a common licensure exam that replaced the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE). Passing NEXT is mandatory to get a license to practice medicine in India.

  • Internship in India: After clearing the NEXT exam, you must complete another 12-month internship in an NMC-approved hospital in India to be eligible for permanent registration.

  • Registration: Once you've completed all the above steps, you can register with the NMC or your state medical council to legally practice medicine in India.

Not Practicing in India

If you are an Indian student who completes your MBBS abroad and decides not to practice in India, the NMC guidelines do not apply to your career path. Your eligibility to practice depends entirely on the regulations of the country where you wish to work.

  • No Indian Licensure Required: Since you are not seeking a license to practice in India, you are not required to take the NEET, NEXT, or complete the internships required by the NMC.

  • Foreign Licensing Exams: To practice in any other country, you will need to meet their specific licensing and residency requirements. This often involves passing their national medical board exams (e.g., USMLE for the USA, PLAB for the UK) and completing a residency program.

  • Global Recognition: The validity of your degree will be determined by the medical council of the country you are moving to. Most reputable foreign medical universities are recognized by international bodies like the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), which is a key factor for practicing globally.
