Vel Tech – Institutional Profile

Vel Tech was established in 1997 by Col. Prof. Vel Dr. R. Rangarajan (Founder President & Chancellor) and Dr. Sagunthala Rangarajan (Foundress President) with the objective of preparing professionally and socially responsible graduates. The university offers academic access to students from diverse backgrounds through structured programs and institutional resources.

The university provides 21 undergraduate and 17 postgraduate degree programs, along with doctoral research opportunities in Engineering & Technology, Management Studies, Arts & Science, and Law. The academic community includes approximately 14,000 students, 753 doctoral scholars, and 805 faculty members. Students are exposed to industry-aligned courses and lectures delivered by international academic professionals. Annually, around 15% of graduates pursue higher education abroad, while eligible students receive placement opportunities in core and IT sectors. Internships are facilitated in domestic and international industries and research institutions.

Vel Tech has been accredited with an ‘A++’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in its second cycle, with a CGPA of 3.53 out of 4.00 valid for five years from February 2023. The institution holds Category-1 Deemed-to-be University status and 12B recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC), enabling access to research funding. Six undergraduate engineering programs and one postgraduate program are accredited under Tier-I by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2024, Vel Tech was ranked 86th in the Engineering category and 96th in the University category. It was also placed in the 11–50 band under the Innovation category and has consistently remained in the top 100 in Engineering since 2017. The university is additionally listed in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and QS Asia University Rankings.
