Army Hospital, also known as Army Hospital, AH and RR Hospital, is the apex flagship medical care centre for the armed forces of India. Completed in the mid 1990s, the hospital, which includes a teaching hospital and nursing college, is located in Delhi Cantonment, New Delhi. Army Hospital Research and Referral (AHRR), located in Delhi Cantonment, stands as the apex medical institution of the Indian Armed Forces. Established in the mid-1990s, it was designed to provide comprehensive healthcare to serving personnel, veterans, and their families, while also functioning as a center for advanced medical research and education. It is the only Armed Forces Medical Services hospital commanded by a Lieutenant General, reflecting its strategic and clinical significance. Spanning a vast campus, AHRR is one of the largest military hospitals in Asia, originally constructed with over 600 beds. It offers services across 27 medical and surgical specialties, including cardiology, oncology, neurology, orthopedics, nephrology, and critical care. The hospital is equipped with cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, and its infrastructure supports both inpatient and outpatient care. Specialized units such as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), trauma center, and assisted reproductive technology (ART) facility are among the most advanced in the country. AHRR also plays a pivotal role in medical education and training. It houses a teaching hospital and a nursing college, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in medicine, surgery, dentistry, and nursing. Courses include B.Sc., MD, MS, MDS, and PG Diplomas across 28 specializations such as Prosthodontics, Radiology, Anaesthesia, ENT, and Critical Care Nursing. The hospital has an annual intake of approximately 234 students across its programs, and its faculty includes some of the most experienced medical professionals in the armed forces.

Beyond its clinical and academic functions, AHRR is a hub for medical innovation and research. It was the first hospital in India to acquire a patient simulator and has pioneered procedures such as cervical disc replacement in Asia. The hospital’s neurosurgery department and organ transplantation unit, known as the Army Organ and Retrieval Transplantation Organisation (AORTA), have achieved national and international recognition. AORTA has one of the highest organ donation conversion rates globally, and its work has been instrumental in promoting ethical and effective organ harvesting practices. AHRR also serves high-profile patients, including the President of India and top military officials. It has treated notable figures such as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, and former President Pranab Mukherjee. The hospital’s reputation for excellence and discretion makes it a preferred destination for critical and sensitive medical cases. In addition to its clinical excellence, AHRR is deeply involved in international medical cooperation. It hosts exchange programs with SAARC and CIS nations, allowing foreign military personnel to receive treatment and training. Missions to countries like Uzbekistan and Egypt reflect its role in global health diplomacy.

In summary, Army Hospital Research and Referral is not just a premier healthcare institution, it is a symbol of the Indian Armed Forces’ commitment to medical excellence, innovation, and service. Its blend of clinical care, education, research, and international collaboration places it among the most respected medical centers in South Asia.
