Overview
Establishment and Vision
The Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management (IIITM), located in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, was established in 1997 as an autonomous institution by the Government of India under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now the Ministry of Education). The institute was envisioned as a pioneering effort to integrate education in information technology and management within a single academic framework, promoting excellence in higher education, research, and consultancy in these domains.
Renaming and Recognition
In 2002, the institute was renamed Atal Bihari Vajpayee Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management (ABV-IIITM) to honor the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, recognizing his contributions to national development and education.
Origins and Early Development
Conceptualization (1992–1995)
The idea for IIITM was first proposed in 1992 by MHRD under the guidance of Dr. P. G. Reddy, aiming to establish advanced institutes akin to the IITs and IIMs, but focused on the convergence of IT and management. In 1995, based on a comprehensive report by AICTE involving leading academicians, policymakers, and industry experts, the Government of India approved the creation of national centers dedicated to IT and management education.
Academic Milestones
- 1998: Launch of the first academic program — Post Graduate Diploma in Management and Information Technology (PGDMIT) with an initial batch of 30 students.
- 1999: Introduction of Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (PGDIT).
- 2000: Expansion into research and integrated programs with the launch of Ph.D. and Five-Year Dual Postgraduate Programs.
