Government Dental College, Thiruvananthapuram, established in 1959, holds the distinction of being the first government dental college in Kerala and one of the most prestigious institutions in South India. Located on Medical College Road in Chalakkuzhi, the college is affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), Thrissur, and is recognized by the Dental Council of India (DCI). The college consistently ranks among the top dental institutions in the country, including a notable position of 21st in the NIRF 2024 rankings, reflecting its commitment to quality education and innovation. The college offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in dentistry. The flagship undergraduate course is the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), which spans five years, including a one-year compulsory rotating internship. Admission to the BDS program is based on the NEET UG entrance exam, followed by centralized counseling conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala. The annual intake for the BDS program is 50 students. At the postgraduate level, the college offers the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in multiple specializations such as Prosthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Periodontology, Oral Medicine and Radiology, Oral Pathology and Microbiology, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, and Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry. Admission to MDS programs is based on NEET MDS scores and subsequent counseling.
The campus is equipped with modern infrastructure to support both academic and clinical training. Lecture halls are fitted with audio-visual aids, and the college maintains well-equipped laboratories for preclinical and clinical practice. The attached dental hospital provides comprehensive oral healthcare services and serves as a training ground for students, offering exposure to a wide range of dental procedures and patient care scenarios. The institution also hosts a South Zone Skill Lab Training Workshop under KUHS, emphasizing hands-on learning and skill development.
The college places strong emphasis on research and academic development. It publishes “Dental Scientia,” a journal that showcases research conducted by MDS students and compiles abstracts of their dissertations submitted to KUHS. Faculty members are actively involved in continuing dental education (CDE) programs, workshops, and collaborative research initiatives. The student-teacher ratio is favorable, with around 49 faculty members supporting a student body of approximately 325, ensuring personalized attention and mentorship. Beyond academics, the college is committed to serving the community, especially marginalized groups, through outreach programs and public health initiatives. Its mission includes fostering dental professionals who are not only clinically competent but also compassionate and socially responsible. The institution’s core values, integrity, dedication to the profession, and global-standard practices, are deeply embedded in its educational philosophy.
