Gauhati University (GU), established on January 26, 1948, is the oldest and most prestigious seat of higher education in Northeast India. Located in Jalukbari, Guwahati, the university was born out of a long-standing regional movement to establish an independent center for learning and research that would cater specifically to the socio-economic and cultural needs of Assam and its neighboring states. Its first Vice-Chancellor was the legendary scholar and philanthropist Krishna Kanta Handiqui. Today, it stands as a NAAC A Grade institution and is consistently ranked among the top universities in India by the NIRF. Campus Life and Infrastructure Sprawling across a lush green 160-acre campus, Gauhati University is often called the "Land of Gulmohur" due to the abundance of flowering trees that transform the landscape during spring.
