Overview
Established in 1951, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur / IIT KGP) is the first of the IITs to be established and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance. Spanning a massive 2,100-acre campus, it is the largest and most diversified among all IITs. The institute was founded on the site of the former Hijli Detention Camp, transitioning from a place of incarceration to a temple of learning. IIT Kharagpur is celebrated for its unique multi-disciplinary research environment, being the only IIT to house a Law school, a Medical school, and a dedicated school for Management within a single technical campus. Robotics & Mechanisms Lab: Focused on industrial automation and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). Cybersecurity & Cryptography Lab: Dedicated to secure communication and digital forensics. Cleanroom & Micro-fabrication Lab: Specialized for VLSI and MEMS device development. T-Hub (Tinkering Lab): A state-of-the-art makerspace for student prototyping and startups.
