Established in 1951, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur / IIT KGP) is the first of the IITs to be established and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance. Spanning a massive 2,100-acre campus, it is the largest and most diversified among all IITs. The institute was founded on the site of the former Hijli Detention Camp, transitioning from a place of incarceration to a temple of learning.
