Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU)

Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU) was established on September 7, 1990, by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It was hived off from Madurai Kamaraj University to cater to the long-felt educational needs of the people in the four southernmost districts of Tamil Nadu: Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari. The university is named after the renowned Tamil scholar and professor, P. Sundaram Pillai (1855–1897), the author of the famous verse drama Manonmaniam. It is his poem that has become "Tamil Thaai Vazhthu," the official invocation song of the state of Tamil Nadu. The university was created with the motto "Reaching the Unreached," specifically focusing on providing affordable higher education to the rural and economically weaker sections of society. Since its inception, it has grown from a fledgling institution into a significant teaching-cum-affiliating university, now overseeing over 100 affiliated colleges and several constituent "Mano" colleges. 2.
