Overview: National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (NITK) is a premier public technical institute located in Surathkal, Mangaluru district, Karnataka. The institute was established in 1960 as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC) and was later upgraded to the status of a National Institute of Technology (NIT) in 2002, making it an Institute of National Importance under an Act of the Parliament of India. NITK functions under the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, and is fully funded by the central government. It is widely regarded as one of the top NITs in the country, known for its academic excellence, research output, strong alumni network, and consistent national rankings. The campus is spread over a large, scenic coastal area of about 295 acres, with direct access to the Arabian Sea. Ranked 17th in Engineering by NIRF 2024, the institute recorded a highest package of ₹54.75 LPA and an average package of ₹18.26 LPA.
