Overview
Pt. B.D.Sharma, PGIMS, Rohtak is situated at a distance of about 240 km from Chandigarh and about 70 km from Delhi on Delhi-Hissar-Sirsa-Fazilka National Highway (NH-10). It is the only major Institution for Medical Education and Research and a tertiary care centre for provision of specialized health care services not only to the people of the State of Haryana, but also to those from Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi and western U.P. The Institute was started under the name of Medical College, Rohtak in the year 1960. For the first three years, the students were admitted to Medical College, Patiala which acted as a host Institution. In 1963, the students were shifted to Rohtak. In the subsequent years, multifaceted expansion measures have transformed the Institute into a fully developed center of Medical Education and research in all the major disciplines of Medicine. In the year 1994, Medical College, Rohtak was renamed as Pt. B.D.Sharma, Medical College, Rohtak and subsequently it was upgraded to a Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in the year 1995. Today Pt. B.D.Sharma, PGIMS, Rohtak is a famous institution not only for medical education but also for the health care facilities both at the National as well as International level. Post Graduate Institute of Dental Sciences (PGIDS), Rohtak, is a premier government dental college in Haryana, established in 1981. Functioning under the aegis of the Government of Haryana and affiliated with Pt. B.D. Sharma University of Health Sciences, PGIDS has earned national recognition for its excellence in dental education, clinical services, and research. It is approved by the Dental Council of India (DCI) and consistently ranks among the top dental institutions in India, including a notable position in the NIRF rankings.
PGIDS offers a comprehensive academic portfolio that includes Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in nine specialties, and various certificate and diploma programs. The BDS program admits 100 students annually, while the MDS program accommodates 33 students per year across disciplines such as Conservative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Pedodontics, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine & Radiology, and Public Health Dentistry. In addition, the institute offers fellowship courses in Micro-Endodontics, Implantology, Maxillofacial Prosthetics, Forensic Odontology, and more. The campus is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including 303 dental chairs, ceramic and metal-ceramic furnaces, dental operating microscopes, implant units, digital OPG machines, and radiographic equipment. These facilities support both undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training, ensuring students gain hands-on experience in a real-world healthcare setting. The institute also operates a 20-bed dental ward, enhancing its capacity for inpatient care and surgical procedures. PGIDS is known for its commitment to public health and community service. It actively participates in government initiatives like the Mukhyamantri Muft Ilaaj Yojna, offering free dental treatment to underserved populations.
