Overview
The concept of establishing a university in Lucknow was initially proposed by Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan, Khan Bahadur, K.C.I.E. of Mahmudabad, who advocated for it through an article published in The Pioneer. The idea gained renewed momentum when Sir Harcourt Butler, K.C.S.I., K.C.I.E., assumed office as the Lieutenant-Governor of the United Provinces. Known for his active engagement in educational affairs, Sir Butler's support significantly advanced the initiative. The foundational step toward creating the university occurred on November 10, 1919, when a specially appointed General Committee comprising educationists and stakeholders convened at Government House, Lucknow. Presiding over the meeting, Sir Harcourt Butler presented the preliminary framework for the proposed institution.
