Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) occupies a unique position in the educational landscape of India. It originated as the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College, which was set up by the visionary social reformer Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1877, and later evolved into the Aligarh Muslim University in 1920 through an Act of the Indian Legislative Council. It is a Central University of national importance, functioning under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
