Overview

Banaras Hindu University (BHU), located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, is one of India’s most prestigious central public research universities. Established in 1916 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya with support from Annie Besant and other national leaders, BHU was envisioned as a center for Indian learning and self-reliance. It is the largest residential university in Asia, with over 30,000 students enrolled and around 18,000 residing on its expansive 1,300-acre main campus and 2,700-acre south campus. BHU is organized into six institutes, 14 faculties, and approximately 135 departments, offering more than 350 academic programs across disciplines such as Arts, Social Sciences, Commerce, Management, Science, Law, Agricultural Science, Medical Science, and Environmental Studies. Its engineering wing was elevated to the status of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT BHU) in 2012, further strengthening its technical education profile. Admissions to various programs are conducted through national-level entrance exams like CUET, JEE, NEET, and others.

The university boasts world-class infrastructure with over 1,000 classrooms and labs, a vast library system housing more than 2 million books and journals, and extensive sports facilities including stadiums, swimming pools, and gymnasiums. BHU has more than 75 hostels, a post office, bank, shopping complex, guest houses, and medical services, ensuring a comprehensive and student-friendly campus experience.

Recognized as an “Institute of Eminence” by the Government of India and a member of the BRICS Universities League, BHU consistently ranks among the top institutions nationally and globally. It was ranked 11th overall in NIRF 2024 and 767th globally by EduRank 2025, with top subject rankings in Chemistry and Biology. The university has produced over 59,000 academic publications and is a hub for cutting-edge research in fields like AI, neuroscience, biochemistry, and materials science.BHU celebrated its centenary in 2015–2016, marking over a century of academic excellence, cultural richness, and national contribution. Its vibrant campus life, cultural festivals, and student societies make it not just an academic institution but a thriving community of scholars and leaders.
