The Faculty of Dentistry at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi, stands as a dynamic and evolving institution committed to excellence in dental education, research, and community service. Recognizing that dental science is no longer confined to treating isolated oral conditions, the faculty embraces a holistic approach to healthcare. Today’s dental professionals are trained to diagnose and manage a wide spectrum of diseases affecting the entire orofacial region, from common dental caries and periodontal infections to complex conditions like oral cancer. This expanded clinical scope reflects the integration of dental science within the broader framework of modern medical disciplines. Established in 2009, the Faculty of Dentistry is relatively young but has rapidly gained recognition for its academic rigor and progressive outlook. Affiliated with Jamia Millia Islamia University and recognized by the National Dental Commission, the faculty offers a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program. This five-year course, including a one-year compulsory internship, is designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for clinical excellence. The curriculum emphasizes evidence-based learning, patient-centered care, and interdisciplinary collaboration, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for the evolving demands of dental practice.
The faculty’s vision for growth includes the introduction of postgraduate programs in super-specialty fields such as Orthodontics, Periodontology, and Oral Surgery. These advanced courses will not only enhance academic depth but also foster clinical innovation and research. Plans are underway to initiate interdisciplinary research projects in collaboration with other departments within the university, promoting a culture of scientific inquiry and cross-disciplinary learning. Infrastructure at the Faculty of Dentistry is modern and student-focused. The campus houses state-of-the-art dental clinics, well-equipped laboratories, and digitally enabled lecture halls. A fully operational dental hospital serves as the primary training ground for students, offering comprehensive oral healthcare services to the public. This clinical integration ensures that students gain hands-on experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of dental and maxillofacial conditions. Beyond academics, the faculty is deeply engaged in community outreach programs aimed at improving oral health awareness and access. Initiatives include dental camps for school children, treatment services for children with special needs, and adult oral health education in neighboring communities. Regular oral health talks on Radio Jamia allow the public to interact with dental experts and receive guidance on preventive care. The Faculty of Dentistry also fosters a vibrant student culture, encouraging participation in cultural events, social campaigns, and national conferences. Students have been recognized for their contributions to socially relevant causes, such as the “Save the Girl Child” initiative, reflecting the institution’s commitment to nurturing socially conscious professionals.
