Govt. Dental College Kottayam, commenced its first academic session in 2002 as the third dental college in Govt. sector. Affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, the courses offered are recognized by Dental Council of India (DCI). Currently, the college offers courses in the field of dental sciences, at the under graduation (BDS) level & postgraduate (MDS) level. The college was formally inaugurated by Sri.A.K.Antony, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Kerala on 1-10-2002. Sri.P. Shankaran Hon'ble Minister for H & FW presided over the function. 

Government Dental College, Kottayam (GDC Kottayam) is one of Kerala’s leading institutions for dental education and clinical training. Established in 2002, it was the third dental college in the government sector in the state. The college is affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), Thrissur, and its courses are recognized by the Dental Council of India (DCI). Since its inception, GDC Kottayam has grown into a respected center for undergraduate and postgraduate dental studies, known for its academic rigor, skilled faculty, and commitment to public health. The college offers both Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) programs. The BDS course spans four and a half years of academic instruction followed by a one-year compulsory internship. Admission to the BDS program is based on the NEET-UG entrance exam, while MDS aspirants must qualify through NEET-MDS. Counselling for both programs is conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala, based on merit, seat availability, and reservation policies. GDC Kottayam provides education across multiple dental specialties including Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontology, Oral Medicine and Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Pathology, and Public Health Dentistry. The institution offers a total of 11 courses across 7 specializations, with a seat intake of around 66 students annually. The faculty comprises experienced professionals who are actively involved in teaching, research, and clinical practice.

The campus is equipped with modern infrastructure to support both academic and clinical training. Facilities include well-furnished lecture halls, advanced laboratories, specialty dental clinics, a radiology unit, and an operation theatre. The college also operates a Mobile Dental Clinic, which extends oral healthcare services to underserved communities in and around Kottayam. This initiative reflects the college’s strong emphasis on community engagement and preventive dentistry. In addition to academics, GDC Kottayam promotes extracurricular activities and student wellness. The campus includes recreational spaces, a library with extensive resources, and digital learning tools. The institution also collaborates with public health programs such as the National Health Mission to promote oral health awareness among specific populations, including antenatal mothers.

The fee structure for the BDS program is approximately ₹83,360 for the full duration, while MDS fees may range up to ₹1,56,300 depending on the specialization.
