The Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi is a public technical university located within the sprawling campus of Banaras Hindu University (BHU). It has a unique legacy, having been founded in 1919 as the Banaras Engineering College (BENCO) by the visionary Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya. It pioneered engineering education in India by being the first to offer degree courses in Mining, Metallurgy, and Pharmaceutics. It was integrated as the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU) in 1968 and was formally designated as an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in 2012. Laboratories: Modernized UG labs and specialized research centers like the National MEMS Design Center and the Center for Advanced Materials. Library: The Shreenivas Deshpande Library houses over 1,40,000 volumes and provides access to 10,000 e-journals. Students also have access to the main BHU Central Library. Hostel Facilities: 16 hostels (including the newly built Dhaulagiri-2 and Morvi-II), offering separate accommodation for boys and girls with 24/7 Wi-Fi and mess facilities. Sports & Other Facilities: Extensive facilities for swimming, tennis, squash, and basketball. The Student Activity Centre (SAC) is a hub for the institute's three major festivals: Technex (Technical), Kashiyatra (Cultural), and Spardha (Sports).
