Admission

The MBA program at IIT Kanpur is offered by the Department of  Management Science (DoMS). The admission process is based on a candidate's CAT score, academic background, work experience, and performance in the interview rounds.

1. Eligibility Criteria for MBA

To be eligible to apply for the two-year, full-time MBA program at IIT Kanpur, candidates must satisfy the following:

  • A valid CAT score is mandatory for all categories.

  • Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree of 3 or 4 years, or an equivalent qualification.

  • Mathematics must have been studied in Class 12 or through an equivalent diploma.

  • Minimum aggregate marks required:

    • General / EWS / OBC-NCL: 60% marks or CPI of 6.0/10.0 at the qualifying degree level.

    • SC / ST / PwD: 50% marks or CPI of 5.0/10.0 at the qualifying degree level.

  • Final-year students appearing for their degree examination are also eligible to apply.

2. Admission Process

The selection process is conducted in four main stages:

Stage 1: Application Submission

Candidates must take the CAT exam and select IIT Kanpur's DoMS as one of their preferred institutions. They must then apply separately to IIT Kanpur's PG admission portal before the specified deadline, providing their CAT scores and academic details.

Stage 2: Shortlisting for GD/PI

Applications are screened based on the CAT percentile and academic eligibility criteria.

  • Actual CAT Cutoff for Shortlisting: The final CAT percentile required for a General category candidate to receive a call for the Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) is typically much higher than the minimum qualifying score (80th percentile). It usually hovers in the range of 92-95 percentile.

Stage 3: Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI)

Shortlisted candidates are invited for the GD and PI rounds. These rounds assess a candidate's communication skills, general awareness, subject knowledge, and management aptitude.

Stage 4: Final Merit List

The final selection and preparation of the merit list are based on a Composite Score calculated using the following weightages (indicative and subject to annual change):

Component Weightage (%)
Personal Interview (PI) 30%
Group Discussion (GD) 20%
Scaled CAT Score 20%
Academic Performance (10th, 12th, Graduation) 20%
Work Experience 10%
Total 100%

Cut offs :

Category Typical Shortlisting CAT Percentile Range
General 90 – 92 percentile
EWS / OBC-NCL 80 – 85 percentile
SC / ST / PwD 65 – 75 percentile
