Campus
IIM Bangalore Campus Overview
The main campus of IIM Bangalore is located on Bannerghatta Road in the Bilekahalli suburb, in the southern part of Bangalore. It covers approximately 105 acres and is known for its lush greenery, offering a serene and non-urban environment. As of 2024, the institute is in the process of developing a second campus over 110 acres, situated around 20 km away near Jigani, on the outskirts of the city in Anekal Taluka, Bangalore Urban district.
The campus is well-connected and can be reached by various modes of private and public transportation, including bike, car, taxi, and bus. A dedicated bus stop named 'IIMB' is conveniently located nearby and is served by BMTC buses. It lies approximately 13 km from the central Kempegowda (Majestic) Bus Station, which serves intra-city, inter-city, and inter-state routes. The campus is also about 13 km from both KSR City Junction and Cantonment Railway Station. It is around 44 km from the Kempegowda International Airport. Additionally, a new 'IIMB' metro station is scheduled to open on the Namma Metro Pink Line in September 2025, as per the 2024 second-quarter updates.
Architecture
The architectural design of the IIM Bangalore campus was led by renowned architect B.V. Doshi, who received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2018 and the RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 2022. He had previously collaborated with iconic architects like Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn. His firm, formerly known as Stein, Doshi & Bhalla, along with Kanvinde & Rai, was responsible for designing the IIMB campus.
The design drew inspiration from the historic city of Fatehpur Sikri, the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, and the natural gardens of Bangalore. The first director of IIMB, N.S. Ramaswamy, asked Doshi to create a campus that captured the green and lively spirit of Bangalore.
The architectural layout emphasizes light and natural environment. It features high-ceiling passageways, trellises, open courtyards, semi-open corridors, geometrically shaped roofs, and rough-textured finishes. The flooring primarily uses Kota stone. The design creates a dynamic interaction between light and shadow throughout the day and across seasons. The original 54,000 sq. meter complex was constructed using hand-chipped granite and exposed concrete. While construction began in 1977 and concluded in 1983, major greening efforts started in 1991. By the 2020s, the campus had over 62 acres of green cover with nearly 30,000 trees and more than 50 ground recharge wells. Later buildings, like the 6,500 sq. meter New Classroom Complex, were designed by architects Sanjay Mohe and P.N. Medappa of Mindspace Architects.
The IIMB campus has received national and international recognition. The New York Times’ Style Magazine ranked it 17th among the 25 Most Significant Works of Post-War Architecture. It was the only Indian building mentioned by multiple architects in a Dezeen feature. Architectural critic William J.R. Curtis called it a model for educational institutions. The campus was also noted in the 2018 Pritzker Prize citation and listed among the top educational campuses by Architectural Digest India and GQ India.
Management Development Centre (MDC)
The Management Development Centre is a dedicated building for executive education and corporate training needs. It features seminar rooms, conference halls, and spaces for interactive sessions. The MDC also includes executive accommodations, a dining facility with a kitchen, a gym, and event areas. A New MDC block was also established at the Jigani campus and was inaugurated by the Vice President of India on March 1, 2023.
Library
The IIMB Library is a four-storey building with a total floor area of 55,000 sq. ft., located adjacent to the academic block. It is accessible to the IIMB community and also offers membership services to external individuals, professionals, companies, and academic institutions, with special consideration for alumni.
The library houses over 163,000 printed books, more than 9,000 journals including e-journals, over 20 newspapers in six different languages, and about 42,000 back issues of various periodicals, mostly related to business and management. Additionally, the collection includes 3,500 eBooks, 1,400 audio-visual resources, and access to an online OPAC catalog, remote access facility, and the Union Catalogue of IIM Libraries Consortium.
