Campus
IIM Mumbai Campus Overview
The main campus of IIM Mumbai is located in Vihar Lake Marg, Powai, in the northern part of Mumbai. Spread across approximately 67 acres, the campus is surrounded by greenery and shares proximity with Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Vihar Lake, offering a peaceful and eco-conscious environment despite being in the financial capital of India. As of 2024, the institute operates primarily from this location, with future infrastructure expansion plans in progress to support the transition into a full-fledged IIM.
The campus is well-connected through both private and public transport options such as auto-rickshaws, taxis, buses, and local trains. The nearest local railway stations are Vikhroli and Kanjurmarg, both about 5 km away. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is approximately 10 km from the campus, making it accessible for domestic and international students. BMTC-style BEST buses also serve the Powai area, making commuting convenient for visitors and students alike.
Architecture
IIM Mumbai’s original infrastructure reflects a blend of functional design and eco-friendly elements. Originally developed as the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) in the 1960s, the campus includes academic buildings, hostels, and administration blocks. While not designed by a globally renowned architect like other IIMs, the layout supports natural ventilation, extensive tree cover, and optimal use of space.
Post its transition to IIM status, the institute has begun architectural upgrades, emphasizing sustainable development, smart classrooms, and modernized hostel facilities. The design focus for new structures aligns with green building principles, energy efficiency, and academic flexibility. The campus also houses lakeside viewing points, open courtyards, and sports areas that enhance student wellness and interaction with nature.
