Established in 1990 as Pondicherry Dental College, the institute underwent several transformations before attaining its current status in 2005. It operates as an autonomous body under the Government of Puducherry and is permanently affiliated with Pondicherry University, a Central University. MGPGI is recognized by the Dental Council of India (DCI) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

The institute offers two major academic programs: the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS). The BDS program spans five years, including a one-year compulsory paid rotating internship, and is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in both theoretical and clinical aspects of dentistry. The MDS program is a three-year postgraduate course offered in seven specializations, including Oral Medicine & Radiology, Pedodontics, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Conservative Dentistry, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Admission to both programs is based on national-level entrance examinations, NEET-UG for BDS and NEET-MDS for postgraduate studies—with seat allocation managed through centralized counselling conducted by CENTAC, Puducherry. MGPGI’s campus is situated in a serene and green environment, offering an ideal setting for academic pursuits and clinical training. The infrastructure includes modern lecture halls, well-equipped laboratories, a comprehensive library, and advanced clinical facilities. The institute also provides separate hostels for male and female students, along with recreational and sports amenities to support overall student development.
