The Department of Medical Education, Uttarakhand, plays a vital role in building this healthcare workforce by training professionals in medicine, nursing, and paramedical sciences. The department is also instrumental in the establishment and upkeep of modern teaching institutions, which function as advanced referral centers for peripheral hospitals, thereby strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure.

The Department of Medical Education was formally separated from the Department of Medical Health Services in 2013, leading to the creation of an independent Directorate of Medical Education. Since then, it has functioned as a standalone entity responsible for overseeing the operations of government medical colleges, teaching hospitals, nursing schools, and paramedical institutions throughout the state.
