Ranchi University: Institutional Overview and Academic Expansion

• Establishment and Early Structure
  Ranchi University was founded on July 12, 1960, as an autonomous entity following its separation from Bihar University, formalized through the RU Gazette Notification Certificate 1960_framed. At inception, the University comprised ten postgraduate departments, one constituent college, and 20 affiliated colleges.

• Current Academic Profile
  Over time, the University has expanded to include:

  • 22 postgraduate departments
  • 19 constituent colleges
  • 47 affiliated colleges
  • An enrolled student population of approximately 160,000
    This growth reflects its foundational objective of improving access to higher education, particularly for tribal and marginalized communities in the region.

• Institutional Bifurcation and Jurisdiction
  Ranchi University has undergone structural reorganization, resulting in the creation of four separate universities:

  • Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag (1992)
  • Nilambar Pitambar University, Medini Nagar (2009)
  • Kolhan University, Chaibasa (2009)
  • Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Ranchi (2019)
    Despite these divisions, the University retains jurisdiction over five key districts in Jharkhand and continues to attract students from neighbouring states including West Bengal, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.

  Located in Jharkhand’s capital, Ranchi University is recognized as a leading institution committed to adapting to global educational trends. It has introduced programmes in diverse fields such as:
