Soban Singh jeena Government institute of Medical science & Research, Almora

In its continued commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery across the remote hill regions of Uttarakhand, the Government of Uttarakhand has taken a significant step forward with the establishment of a new medical college in the Kumaon region. Following the successful setup of state medical institutions in Haldwani (Nainital), Srinagar (Garhwal), and Dehradun, the state has launched the Soban Singh Jeena Government Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Almora.

Established under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the Government of India, this institute aims to bridge the healthcare and medical education gap in the hilly terrains of the state. Currently, the college offers 100 MBBS seats annually, supporting the development of a new generation of medical professionals dedicated to serving underserved communities.

Campus and Infrastructure

The medical college is located across two separate campuses:

• Academic Campus:
  The main college campus spans 25 acres (9.90 hectares) at the Moth-free Estate, Pandey Khola, near Vikas Bhawan, Almora. It is accessible via State Highway 37, making it well-connected to the rest of the region.

• Teaching Hospital:
  The associated clinical training is provided at the existing Govardhan Tiwari Government Base Hospital, situated approximately 7 kilometers from the main campus. This facility, currently a 200-bed hospital, is in the process of being upgraded to a 500-bed capacity and is located on 17.13 acres (6.85 hectares) of land.

The establishment of this medical institute not only enhances access to quality healthcare in the region but also opens doors for local students aspiring to pursue careers in medicine. The institute has applied for the Letter of Permission from the Medical Council of India (MCI) for its 2019–20 MBBS batch, reflecting its readiness to contribute to both education and service in Uttarakhand.
