Overview The National Institute of Technology Patna (NIT Patna) is the 18th NIT established by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was created in 2004 by rechristening the erstwhile Bihar College of Engineering, which traces its roots back to 1886, making it the sixth oldest engineering institute in India. It is recognized as an Institution of National Importance. Location: Ashok Rajpath, Patna, Bihar - 800005. The campus is located on the southern bank of the river Ganges. The National Institute of Technology Patna (NITP) is a premier public technical institution and an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. With a heritage spanning over 138 years, it is the sixth oldest engineering college in India, having originated in 1886 as a Survey Training School and eventually evolving into the Bihar College of Engineering before being elevated to NIT status in 2004. The institute is currently in a transitional phase of immense growth. While it has long operated from its historic campus on the banks of the River Ganges at Ashok Rajpath, a massive new 125-acre state-of-the-art campus is being developed in Bihta. This expansion is set to revolutionize the institute’s research capabilities and student capacity, making it one of the most modern technical hubs in Eastern India. Advanced Laboratory & Research Infrastructure NIT Patna’s academic strength is rooted in its robust laboratory ecosystem, which blends historic rigor with 21st-century technology. The institute has invested heavily in Centres of Excellence and specialized labs to ensure students are industry-ready. Computing and AI Facilities: The institute houses a high-performance computing center. The Department of Computer Science features specialized labs for Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Cloud Computing. These labs are equipped with high-end workstations and licensed software for deep learning and big data analytics. Microelectronics and VLSI Lab: One of the crown jewels of the ECE department, this lab is part of the "Special Manpower Development Programme for Chips to System Design" (SMDP-C2SD). It features industry-standard EDA tools like Cadence, Mentor Graphics, and Synopsys, allowing students to design and simulate complex integrated circuits. Mechanical and Robotics Workshop: The mechanical department features a modern CNC Machining Center, Mechatronics labs, and a Robotics Lab where students work on automation and autonomous vehicle prototypes. Civil Engineering & Geotech Labs: Given the institute's long history, the Civil department possesses some of the most comprehensive testing facilities in the region, including an Advanced Structural Engineering Lab and Environmental Engineering Labs used for major government consultancy projects in Bihar. Electrical Machines & Power Systems Lab: Features real-time digital simulators and high-voltage testing equipment, allowing students to study smart grid technologies and renewable energy integration.
